Although breastfeeding is nature’s way of providing sustenance to an infant, there is still some question about whether breast fed or formula
milk is the best nutritionally.
Some mothers feel guilty if they choose not to breastfeed, and those who do are sometimes ostracized when feeding in public, even with the utmost discretion. There is a lot of opinion out there related to this subject, and even though neither option is considered the wrong option, there is definitely some partiality toward a mother’s milk.
Medicine Net evaluates both breastfeeding and formula feeding, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of both, as well as the reasons why a parent should take the decision seriously.
Woman’s Health.gov looks at the benefits of breastfeeding to infants, moms, and even society.
National Institutes of Health focuses on the health benefits of breastfeeding term and preterm infants. “…researchers found that infants who had ingested breast milk were able to leave the neonatal intensive care unit sooner,” the author states, “and were able to make the transition faster from intravenous feeding to receiving all their nutrition through a feeding tube than were infants receiving formula.”
Straightdope.com offers a question answer format and features a fun and informative article on breastfeeding and arguments that surround the issue. “For centuries mothers unable to breast-feed have used animals' milk instead,” the author writes, “cow being the most common due to its availability. Unsurprisingly, none is as good for a human baby as its mom's.”
ABC News features a personal story about a woman who breastfed her children until aged 6, and discusses her reasons why. "’In this culture, breasts are viewed as sexual,’ Paul said. ‘We use breasts to sell everything from beer to motorcycles, then a toddler is in mom's arms nursing for what they're supposed to be used for and everybody freaks out.’”
It is statistically proven that breast milk offers the complete nutritional needs for a baby. If a parent is willing to offer either breast fed or formula milk, then the former should be the chosen method. Although formula milk does contain the necessary nutrients, it really cannot compare with breast fed milk.
